I am a retired computer systems programmer and I own a 3 bedroom condominium 3.5 miles from the NIH main campus and 5 blocks from NRC Headquarters across from the White Flint metro station. It is on the ground level with a patio entrance. I use one of the bedrooms and for the last 15 years have been renting out the other two only to post-doc, researcher, and student males who work at NIH, NRC, or the Naval Hospital.
The monthly rent of $675.00 includes:

Convenient 3 month minimum rental lease. After 3 months the lease reverts to a 30 day notice lease which means either the landlord or the renter is required to give 30 day notice in order to terminate the lease. 4 blocks from the White Flint Metro (Red Line subway) station which is 2 stops from the NIH Medical Center Metro stop. NIH employees ride the metro free.
4 blocks from the free NIH shuttle bus terminal at Pike and Rose Plaza (Goggle Montrose Road Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland)
The condominium development is on the main bus lines. If you don't want to walk to the White Flint Metro station or the NIH shuttle bus terminal then you can take a bus to these locations. They run every 10 minutes during rush hour.
Living within a mile of the main NIH campus may not be all that desirable if you do not have a car. The closest fast food chains and large grocery stores are more than a mile away if you are on north side of the campus. You should ask potential landlords how far the stores are from their location and how do you get to them (walk, bus, metro)?
The room is about 12 ft x 12 ft. It contains 1 twin bed, 1 professional desk, 1 desk chair,1 27 inch color TV, 1 6’4’’ long 9 drawer dresser, one 5 foot tall 5 shelf bookcase, and a 3’ long 6’ high garment closet. It also has a full size ceiling-to-floor window with an excellent view of the small surrounding wooded area. You must supply your own bed linens, pillow(s), towels, and toiletries. Just down the hall from my apartment is a gated clothes washing utility room. It contains 2 professional washing machines and 2 professional dryers. The washing machines cost $1.00 and the dryers cost 75 cents a load.
The Walnut Grove Condominium Development:
The development contains a nice outdoor swimming pool complex and a brand new tennis court located next to my unit. The building is located directly behind Loehmanns Plaza which contains some fast food places. There are 5 major Grocery stores within a four block radius. If you have a car there is ample unassigned parking spaces in the condominium parking lot 40 feet from my patio.
